How We Got Here
After being adopted into a rock solid northwestern Indiana family at the age of three – (and eventually uncovering a rather dramatic discovery of these first years) – the author was introduced to the game of golf within a matter of months. And through a series of changes that were set in motion, and the “emotional clouding” that was to follow him throughout his (now) 70 years of life – the “North Star” that somehow guided him through a series of life’s overwhelming challenges – was this “stick + ball” and the world that exists around it.
A good area junior and high school golfer, a fair college player, and a so-so golfer on the southeastern U.S. mini tours (and) PGA section events in the Chicago area – the fates directed him into the business of golf – becoming the youngest (at the time – at age 22) head golf professional in the state of Illinois, and at age (26) – the youngest head golf professional at a private C.C. in the well respected Illinois section of the P.G.A. after nearly a decade in this pursuit – Mr. Mandich moved into the off-course discount segment of the business, and then quickly moved on to the position of a sales representative for () major golf manufacturing companies, eventually founding his own golf ball manufacturing plant. Inspired by an even greater opportunity, and after a (4) year stint as an executive with one of golf’s largest manufacturing companies, Mr. Mandich went on to found yet another company in the golf industry.
During this time, Mr. Mandich was a contributor to various golf publications, a guest speaker for several national golf organizations, and is currently an associate member of the Golf Writer’s Association of America, as well as, the feature writer for Golf Plus Newspaper & www.golfplusonline.net
Throughout all these years, Mr. Mandich put aside time to continue to write his own “works” on golf, as well as, continuing to teach the game he loved. Eventually, again after more twists and turns that changed his personal and family life immensely – he began an adventure into a multitude of other activities in and around the game.
The true story here are these twists and turns and ups and downs that were pervasive throughout his thousands of interactions with others and tens of thousands of miles traveled. Running into situations & people inside and outside of golf that you will most assuredly find compelling.
And, some, for good reason, have called Mr. Mandich the “Forrest Gump” of golf – either through his diverse background in most facets of the golf world or through happenstance meetings with icons of all walks of life - *some of which will even surprise those who have known him best!
There is little doubt that golfers and non-golfers alike will be fascinated with how one man’s journey through a mere (65) years can be rich in so many ways, so full of external and internal turmoil, and so clear in regard as to how the world of golf made him a welcoming home every time his real world collapsed around him.
